Dear NUSD Parents,
We hope your summer break is off to a great start, and we wanted to follow up on a communication that was sent to families in May that announced a shift in start times for 4 of our sites that serve middle and high school students. We know that families received a lot of information at the end of the 2020-21 school year, so we wanted to make sure that you were aware of the schedule changes. Our plan is to continue to share communications with you throughout the summer to help you plan well in advance of the start of the 2021-22 school year in August.
As a reminder (as shared in May) in October of 2019, Governor Newsom signed SB 328, which requires the school day for middle schools to begin no earlier than 8:00 am and high schools no earlier than 8:30 am by July 1, 2022. Since this change will impact the start and ending times for our middle and high school families, we wanted to give families ample notice to expect a change to their student’s schedule. The law only includes middle and high school, so there will be no change to the elementary and K- 8 school schedules.
While some of our secondary school sites are already meeting the required time frames, there still may be a change to the school site bell schedule due to other factors such as district-provided transportation that’s necessary for some students to be able to attend school.
We realize these changes will impact each family differently. Taking all of the information above into consideration and to ensure compliance of SB 328 by July 1, 2022, the needs of our students and staff, and time for families to plan accordingly, the following schedules will be implemented at our four secondary schools for the 2021-2022 school year.
Please refer to the table below for new start and end times:
*NOTE: LGA 6-8 grades already meet the SB 328 requirement start time of 8:00 a.m. However, we will shift all grade levels at the site together so their bell schedules will remain the same.

Como recordatorio (como se compartió en mayo) en octubre del 2019, el gobernador Newsom firmó SB 328, que requiere que el día escolar para las escuelas secundarias inicie no antes de las 8:00 a.m. y las escuelas preparatorias no antes de las 8:30 a.m. para el 1ro de julio del 2022. Dado que este cambio afectará a las horas de inicio y finalización para nuestras familias de la escuela secundaria y preparatoria, queríamos dar a las familias un aviso amplio para que esperen un cambio en el horario de sus estudiantes. *NOTA: Los grados 6-8 de LGA ya cumplen con la hora de inicio del requisito SB 328 de las 8:00 a.m. Sin embargo, cambiaremos todos los niveles de grado en el sitio juntos para que sus horarios de campana sigan siendo las mismas.
