Recruiting Diverse Future Teachers in NUSD

Originally approved on October 11, 2017, by NUSD Board Trustees, our Diverse Future Teachers program is an exciting plan to invest in our future teachers that reflect the diversity of our community! On April 14, 2022 NUSD Board Trustees approved a three-year extension of the Diverse Future Teachers program. Our primary interest is to find former NUSD students who are in the final stages of earning their bachelor’s degree and are considering a career in education. Additionally, we are looking for candidates that meet qualifications and experiences identified below that we know will support our diverse student population, especially candidates like current NUSD classified staff. A pamphlet with complete details about this opportunity and an FAQ section are provided below.

Here’s what NUSD will do to help you become a teacher:

  • Pay 80% of the cost of your one-year teacher credential program
  • Provide an NUSD Macbook for use during your credential program
  • Provide a $500 monthly allowance for 12 months if you choose to live within NUSD boundaries during the duration of your credential program
  • Provide monetary incentives if you meet requirements for:
    • Diversity: $5,000 (i.e. lived in a ZIP code that matches our demographics; bilingual; demonstrated academic interest in subjects such as gender, race, multicultural studies; involvement with organizations that support underserved students)
    • Earning teaching credentials in “hard to fill” subject areas: $5,000
(i.e. Math, Science, mod/severe Special Education, World Language)

If selected for participation in this program, in return for this investment, you will commit to teaching in NUSD for a minimum of 3 years, because we believe that the consistency and commitment of diverse, quality teachers will help our students achieve our vision that they become college and career ready.
