Inderkum High School captured two of California’s most prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) awards today for the Middle Years Programme, encompassing 6th through 10th grades.

Tigers’ 10th-grader Isabel Gatdula won a $1,000 cash award as MYP’s top student in Northern California. The straight-A student called the honor “amazing” and said she’ll probably bank the money for college. She hopes to be a clinical psychologist someday.

Isabel’s award, officially the Garry Prather Outstanding IB Student Award, wins $500 for her school as well.

Inderkum teacher Karen Taylor was all smiles today, too, after learning from Principal Dan Motherspaw that she was named California’s top MYP teacher, an honor that comes with a $1,000 cash prize. Ms. Taylor teaches seniors, too, and last year each of her 12th-grade students passed the rigorous IB English exam with a score of 4 or higher on a 7-point scale.

A third member of Inderkum’s IB program, teacher Danielle Black, won the MYP Teacher Training Award. It will pay up to $2,500 of her costs for additional IB training this summer in Lake Tahoe. Only one such MYP award is presented each academic year.

All three awards were offered by the California Association of IB World Schools, which last year selected Inderkum’s Mikaela Carrillo as Northern California’s top student for the IB Diploma Programme, covering 11th and 12th grades.

IB is a world-class academic program honored by top universities. It strives to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
