Congratulations to Melissa May, our newest District Teacher of the Year. May learned this morning that she had been selected to represent the teachers of Natomas Unified during a surprise visit to her school at Inderkum High School. May heads the Broadcast Media pathway for the Inderkum Tigers where she teaches them the fundamentals of Broadcast Media and creates space for students to get hands on experience with the production of Tiger Talk. Here’s an excerpt from her nomination from former Principal Dan Motherspaw and why she’s so deserving of this title.

“Melissa embodies everything that a teacher should be. She is caring, thoughtful, welcoming, considerate, understanding, and passionate about her subject. I have observed her countless times, setting aside her own feelings, agenda, to assist and care for her students first. I have been in her room many times because of our mutual responsibility advising our FNL Club to witness all the above mentioned characteristics. Melissa goes beyond what’s required of her. She brings experiences into the classroom that are enriching, realistic, hand on, and engaging to all students. Melissas does not limit her contribution to just the classroom. She is always willing to go beyond, and volunteers to advise FNL (top chapter in Sacramento, and State), Natomas School Foundation 5K host, California Teacher of Year host, etc.”
