On occasion, a household (which can be thought of as a “family unit”) will have more than one address associated with it. The best example of this is a family who has a physical address but prefers to receive mail at a P.O. Box.
In this case, we are adding a “Secondary” address (the P.O. Box) to the household.
To add a Secondary address to a household, search the household using the name of someone in the household and click on the household’s “Addresses” tab. The household below currently has only one address (the physical address) which is marked for Mailing:
IC – Adding Secondary Address 1
Click on the “Find New Address” button and search for the P.O. Box. NOTE: Depending on your search criteria, there may be more results than shown, so it is recommended you search for the Secondary address in IC first). If the address does not yet exist in IC, you can create a new one here:
If the Secondary address you need is found, select it and enter a start date (either the current date you are entering the data or a future date if the family has specified that the address will go into effect at a later time). You will then mark this Secondary address as “Mailing” and also “Secondary”:
At this point, the one household has two Mailing addresses. The P.O. Box is marked for Mailing and is indicated as Secondary, while the physical address is by default the Primary address (the Primary address on a household always needs to be a physical address). However, the Primary physical address is still marked for Mailing.
If the family wants mail going to the Secondary address only and not the Primary physical address, select the Primary physical address and uncheck the “Mailing” box:
You should now see that the Secondary (P.O. Box) address is marked for both Mailing and Secondary whereas the physical address is Primary and not marked for Mailing:
Below is the sample student’s Household tab, showing that she belongs to only one household, but that the household has two addresses attached to it:
This is NOT the same as making a student’s membership in a household “Secondary” which applies to students who split their time between more than one household at different addresses. See the NUSD Knowledge Base article “IC – Making a Student’s Membership in a Household Secondary” for information about Primary and Secondary membership in households.
