Students who live with more than one guardian at different addresses can and should be members of more than one household. However, they should have “Primary” membership in ONLY ONE household, with “Secondary” membership in any other households. Even if the guardians of a student share 50/50 custody, one household must be selected as “Primary”. As long as the guardians in both households are checked for “Mailing” on their relationship to a student, they will receive mail (such as report cards) for the student, regardless of whether it is the student’s “Primary” or “Secondary” household.
Students with “Primary” membership in more than one household will potentially not have their enrollments rolled forward correctly to the next year. Having more than one Primary household also creates errors and issues with data extracts and reports when multiple primary addresses pull for the same student.
To make a student’s membership to a household “Secondary”, search for the household containing the student, select the “Members” tab, click on the student, and check the “Secondary” box. This makes the student’s membership to the household “Secondary”:
Here is a sample student’s Household tab, correctly showing her membership to two different households with one marked as “Primary” and the other marked as “Secondary”:
This is NOT the same as adding a “Secondary” address to one single household (such as a P.O. Box). See the NUSD Knowledge Base article “IC – Adding a Secondary Address to a Household” for information about when a secondary address would be added to a single household.
