Dear Natomas Unified Community,
I had a message ready two Wednesdays ago. It started with a desire to have us focus on hope and the optimism of the coming year. I decided the timing was poor as the events in Washington, D.C. unfolded. So here is my second attempt, a little later than I had hoped. The wait did allow us to learn more about the new state guidance for reopening schools. This message will have some good news, some uncertainty, and clarify some likely misconceptions.
Reopening schools for in-person learning:
As the Greater Sacramento Area was allowed to “reopen” some businesses while remaining in the Purple Tier, schools have a number of new hurdles they have to cross. Some of those are in our control, and I have little doubt NUSD will be ready for that. One major challenge that still stands in the way of reopening schools is the county data. The new state guidance allows schools to reopen with masks, social distancing, regular COVID testing and more IF, and here’s the catch, for elementary (TK-6) IF Sacramento has 25 new daily COVID-19 cases per 100,000. And for secondary (7-12) it’s even more restrictive with 7 new daily COVID-19 cases per 100,000 or a return to Red Status. Currently, state data has Sacramento County at 57.6 new cases per 100,000. That’s more than double the allowable amount. We are working to add the new elements of the new state guidance so when our numbers reach the state target, reopening schools is possible. It will be a modified reopening as much of the requirements that have been in place since March 2020 and after remain. Schools and districts that have reopened have faced class closures, school closures, staffing shortages – definitely not normal. We would be no different than those other places. In fact, even with minimal staff on campus and no students, we had to shut down at least one school facility before winter break due to an outbreak (there were not enough adults to run/clean the facility. I am not sure what is better. The consistency and frustrations that come with Distance Learning or the likely on and off inconsistency of attempting to remain open when we are allowed to. Your input matters to the Board and I. Soon we will send a simple survey that will be taken into account and final numbers shared with you all. Please everyone take the time to complete this very short feedback. It will not be the sole factor but the survey feedback will help. Now onto some good news…
Good News:
Grading: Continued collaboration with our Natomas Teachers Association has led to an agreement that would execute Board action to allow students in 9th-12th grades extra opportunities to remediate/fix D and F grades even after the 1st semester has ended. More information will follow Board consideration of an interim policy adjustment to support struggling students at this Wednesday’s Board Meeting. The Board’s resolution and this agreement takes into account these extraordinary times some students face.
COVID Testing: With support from the state of California and the hard work of our staff, NUSD will now be a rapid testing site for our students and staff, and if the state keeps providing more tests, we can increase testing for the whole community. Rapid tests get results in 15 minutes. This new program is a requirement of the new reopening guidance and would allow us to identify the differences between allergies on windy days and COVID.
The Vaccine:
I believe we all know the vaccine roll-out is happening much slower than desired. The vaccine requires an initial dose, then a few weeks, followed by a second dose, followed by more time. It is POSSIBLE, educators could start receiving this in February. The process carries through into March and possibly April/May. The vaccine will not return schools to “normal.” Much of the state’s guidance will remain meaning social distancing, masks, etc. Plus, most youth will be in the latter groups to receive the vaccine. While I know this will not make me popular, I need to keep it real. It will be some time before “normal” returns in our schools. That said, I cannot and will not rule out some form of in-person learning this year. Natomas Unified stands by to help the state, county, and nonprofits accelerate the distribution of the vaccine. To be prepared, we have ordered the proper equipment and anticipate it arriving in February. We will be ready when the opportunity comes to help distribute the vaccine to our community, much like we run the testing center.
These last 11 months have been both frustrating and inspiring for how our students and staff have handled this all. The emotions of this near year really runs the gamut of emotions. I look forward to the moment when my communication is as simple as “It’s over and we are back to normal.” We are not there yet, but there is light at the end of this extraordinary long tunnel.

Tenía un mensaje listo hace dos miércoles. Comenzó con el deseo de que nos enfoquemos en la esperanza y el optimismo del próximo año. Decidí que no era el momento adecuado a medida que se desarrollaban los acontecimientos en Washington, D.C. Así que aquí está mi segundo intento, un poco más tarde de lo que esperaba. La espera nos permitió aprender más sobre la nueva guía estatal para la reapertura de escuelas. Este mensaje tendrá buenas noticias, cierta incertidumbre y aclara algunos posibles conceptos erróneos.
Reapertura de escuelas para el aprendizaje presencial:
Dado que se permitió que el área metropolitana de Sacramento “reabrir” algunos negocios mientras permanecían en el nivel morado, las escuelas tienen una serie de nuevos obstáculos que deben cruzar. Algunos de ellos están bajo nuestro control, y tengo pocas dudas de que NUSD estará listo para eso. Un desafío importante que aún se interpone en el camino de la reapertura de escuelas son los datos del condado. La nueva guía estatal permite que las escuelas vuelvan a abrir con máscaras, distanciamiento social, pruebas regulares de COVID y si, y aquí está el detalle, para la escuela primaria (TK – 6) Si Sacramento tiene 25 nuevos casos diarios de COVID-19 por cada 100,000. Y para la secundaria (7-12) es aún más restrictivo con 7 nuevos casos diarios de COVID-19 por cada 100,000 o un regreso al estado de nivel rojo. Actualmente, los datos estatales tienen al condado de Sacramento en 57.6 casos nuevos por cada 100,000. Eso es más del doble de la cantidad permitida. Estamos trabajando para agregar los nuevos elementos de la nueva guía estatal para que cuando nuestros números alcancen el objetivo estatal, sea posible reabrir las escuelas. Será una reapertura modificada ya que permanecen muchos de los requisitos que han estado vigentes desde marzo del 2020 y después. Las escuelas y los distritos que han reabierto han enfrentado cierres de aulas, cierres de escuelas, escasez de personal, definitivamente no es normal. No seríamos diferentes a esos otros lugares. De hecho, incluso con un personal mínimo en el campus y sin estudiantes, tuvimos que cerrar al menos una instalación escolar antes de las vacaciones de invierno debido a un brote (no había suficientes adultos para administrar/limpiar las instalaciones. No estoy seguro de qué es mejor . La consistencia y las frustraciones que conlleva el aprendizaje a distancia o la posible inconsistencia de intentar permanecer abiertos cuando se nos permite. Su opinión es importante para la Directiva y para mí. Pronto enviaremos una encuesta sencilla que se tendrá en cuenta y los números finales se compartirán con todos ustedes. Por favor, tómese el tiempo para completar comentarios muy breves. No será el único factor, pero los comentarios de la encuesta ayudarán. Ahora, algunas buenas noticias …
Buenas noticias:
Calificación: La colaboración continua con nuestra Asociación de Maestros de Natomas ha llevado a un acuerdo que ejecutaría la acción de la directiva para permitirles a los estudiantes en los grados 9 al 12 oportunidades adicionales para corregir/corregir las calificaciones D y F incluso después de que haya terminado el primer semestre. Más información seguirá la consideración de la Directiva de un ajuste de política provisional para apoyar a los estudiantes con dificultades en la reunión de la Mesa Directiva de este miércoles. La resolución de la Directiva y este acuerdo tienen en cuenta estos tiempos extraordinarios que enfrentan algunos estudiantes.
Pruebas COVID: Con el apoyo del estado de California y el arduo trabajo de nuestro personal, NUSD ahora será un sitio de pruebas rápido para nuestros estudiantes y personal, y si el estado sigue proporcionando más pruebas, podemos aumentar las pruebas para toda la comunidad. Las pruebas rápidas obtienen resultados en 15 minutos. Este nuevo programa es un requisito de la nueva guía de reapertura y nos permitiría identificar las diferencias entre las alergias en días ventosos y COVID.
La vacuna:
Creo que todos sabemos que el lanzamiento de la vacuna está ocurriendo mucho más lento de lo deseado. La vacuna requiere una dosis inicial, luego de unas pocas semanas, una seguida dosis, seguida de más tiempo. Es POSIBLE, los educadores podrían comenzar a recibir esto en febrero. El proceso continúa hasta marzo y posiblemente abril/mayo. La vacuna no devolverá las escuelas a la “normalidad”. Gran parte de la orientación del estado seguirá estando relacionada con el distanciamiento social, máscaras, etc. Además, la mayoría de los jóvenes estarán en los últimos grupos para recibir la vacuna. Si bien sé que esto no me hará popular, debo mantenerlo real. Pasará algún tiempo antes de que regrese a lo “normal” en nuestras escuelas. Dicho esto, no puedo ni descartaré alguna forma de aprendizaje en presencial este año. El Distrito Escolar Unificado de Natomas está a la espera de ayudar al estado, el condado y las organizaciones sin fines de lucro a acelerar la distribución de la vacuna. Para estar preparados, hemos pedido el equipo adecuado y anticipamos que llegará en febrero. Estaremos listos cuando se presente la oportunidad de ayudar a distribuir la vacuna a nuestra comunidad, al igual que administramos el centro de pruebas.
Estos últimos 11 meses han sido frustrantes e inspiradores por cómo nuestros estudiantes y el personal han manejado todo esto. Las emociones de este año cercano realmente abarcan toda la gama de emociones. Espero con ansias el momento en que mi comunicación sea tan simple como “Se acabó y volvemos a la normalidad”. Todavía no hemos llegado, pero hay luz al final de este túnel extraordinariamente largo.
