K-5/K-8 Summer Learning and Enrichment Camp – Limited space remaining

Each of our 9 K-5/K-8 school sites is offering an in-person Summer Learning and Enrichment Camp called Expedition. While this has been by invitation only, there is still limited space available at some school sites. The Summer Learning and Enrichment camps will provide a 4-week summer learning program for targeted students currently in grades K-6th. Expedition is a theme-based enrichment activity that expands horizons, promotes student ownership, fights learning disruption and provides educational experiences. The program begins on Monday, June 21 and operates through July 23, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day (there will be no session during the week of July 5th).

NUSD Certificated Staff supporting the 4-week program are designing fun and enriching experiences that are infused with opportunities to develop student’s literacy skills to prepare them for the 2021-2022 school year. Particularly students will be focusing on developing their writing skills, tied to the thematic program they are engaged with during the 4 weeks, including assessments at the beginning and end of the program to measure students’ growth. Staff will develop a schedule that allows students to work with the site teacher for a period of time while also attending The Center’s program.

SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity (MOSAC) Science Camp – FULL

NUSD has partnered with the SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity (MOSAC) to provide our  K-6 students with the opportunity to attend their brand new summer camps located in downtown Sacramento. Students that attend will have a blast as they explore, innovate, engineer, experiment, create, play, and make friends. Students will engage in hands-on activities designed to ignite the imagination and build confidence in various science topics. Each camp is one week long, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., daily. District wide communication was sent to all K-6 families to complete an application to attend. As stated in the application form, priority for enrollment will be given to students based on academic and other needs and is subject to space availability. Due to the overwhelming number of applications, staff is providing families with a confirmation email on Monday, June 7, if their student(s) was selected to attend a MOSAC Science Camp. Please know that NUSD is determining if there is any potential to provide on-going opportunities for students on the waiting list to participate in an on-site mobile Science Camp. We will provide communication to families if this option becomes available.

Kinder Readiness – FULL

The Natomas Unified Kindergarten Readiness Summer Program funded by First 5 Sacramento is designed to prepare children for Transitional Kindergartengarten (TK) or Kindergarten (K) success in the upcoming school year. Enrollment is only available for those registered for TK or Kindergarten for the 2021-2022 school year. The in-person readiness program is open to all eligible children regardless of what school they are registered to attend. The program will begin June 16 and run through July 2, from 7:30-2:30 p.m. each day. This program is at capacity.

English Learner Summer Institute – Space AVAILABLE

The English Learner Summer Institute is designed to support our students learning English as a second language in grades 4th-8th and will focus on fun fictional reading and work towards getting students excited about reading again. There is also a speaking and writing component connected to this fictional fun reading endeavor, allowing staff to support our English learners in English language development (ELD). This in-person program begins on June 16 and runs through July 23 (there will be no session during the week of July 5th), from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day.

High School Summer School Credit Recovery – Space AVAILABLE

Inderkum High, Leroy Greene Academy, and Natomas High will be offering three in-person credit recovery summer sessions to provide students the opportunity to make up classes needed for both graduation and a-g. Students will be able to attend class in-person with a teacher to guide them through the required coursework. The program begins on Wednesday, June 16 and operates through August 6, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day (there will be no session during the week of July 5th).

Students and families can contact their high school to learn more about courses being offered this summer, or if other supports for credit recovery may be possible.

Improve Your Tomorrow (IYT) Summer Entrepreneurship Academy – Space AVAILABLE
*Hybrid (combination of in-person & virtual components)*

This program is limited to 25 high school students currently enrolled in the IYT program at Discovery and Natomas High School. Students participating in this program will receive services 5 hours per week in a hybrid model with instruction provided both online and in-person. There will be workshops, seminars, and interactive sessions for students to learn about business and entrepreneurship, such as marketing, accounting, finance, design strategy, and leadership. The program will also support students in math and writing. Students will have the opportunity to create and build their own business pitches to compete for $1,000. Additionally, the students who complete the academy will receive a certificate in entrepreneurship.

 Summer @ City Hall – FULL

City Hall hosts an annual program called “Summer @ City Hall” for high school juniors and seniors, allowing students to learn about the local government process and to become active members of their community. Per our contract with Summer @ City Hall, Natomas Unified has 18 reserved slots for this program, which will be run virtually this summer. Currently, all 18 spots have been reserved, with students on the waiting list to fill any unwanted slots from other school districts.

Special Education Extended School Year (ESY) Program – Space AVAILABLE

ESY is a mandated service identified in a student’s IEP (Individualized Education Plan). The plan includes services such as specialized academic instruction and related services and is goal-driven. The purpose of ESY is to assist students with maintaining skills to avoid regression, which may negatively impact progress made toward IEP goals. ESY services are provided for 20 days during the summer when the regular school program is not in session. This summer, ESY includes reading and math intervention as well as enrichment and social emotional activities. Related services will be provided.  If your student is earning a regular high school diploma and needs to earn credit, please speak to your students’ school regarding enrollment in their high school site summer program (not the Special Education program).

Summer Bridge/Transition Programs – Schools will send opportunities via email to families

Individual school sites have developed different 1-2 week, half-day, in-person programs before the start of the year to support students’ transition back to school with fun social-emotional and academic support. Different grade levels will offer different programs such as STEM, Fine Arts, Music, Creative Writing, Digital Media, ELA, Math Camp and more at the K-8 levels and programs such as Link Crew, Career Exploration and more at the secondary sites.

More details will be shared out from individual school sites, as these programs will begin later in the summer.

Social-Emotional Support (SES) – For all students

The SES team is providing direct social-emotional support to our most at-risk students who are interested in continuing this summer. Services include SES support embedded in the summer programming, enrichment activities to promote connection and relationships.

Virtual Tutoring and Wellness Center (VTWC) – For all students

The VTWC is a virtual support program for students grades K-12. The VTWC is offering virtual academic and enrichment opportunities for all students this summer, with a focus on academic success and social emotional wellness. In addition to our enrichment workshops and our academic tutoring sessions, we are launching two new programs: Jump Ahead and ON CALL Teacher.  Jump Ahead is a workshop designed to prepare students for the fall- staff will help familiarize students with grade level curriculum (grades K-6) and also core classes such as Math I, II, III, AP Calculus and science.  The ON CALL Teacher is being piloted this summer- a teacher is on call throughout the afternoon to answer the “zoom-call” if any of our summer students require homework support and they do not have a parent available to help. Summer enrichment activities include Art and Literacy, Journaling and Mindfulness, Virtual Book Clubs, Virtual Field Trips, Cooking, and lunch bunch, to name a few.  As always, we will be offering social emotional support, targeted reading and math intervention.  Parent training for the summer include Screenagers, Love and Logic, and an introduction to Trauma Informed Practices, Restorative Justice and PBIS.

As Natomas Unified shifts into our Summer Learning Programs, we continue to be committed to the health and safety of our staff, students and community. As of right now, we are still required to follow guidelines outlined in our COVID-19 Safety Plan.  Until the Center for Disease Control (CDC) approves the Governor’s reopening, and the CDC guidance is approved by California Department of Public Health (CDPH), we are not able to change our already established protocols.  For now, students will continue to be required to wear face coverings on campus and follow the safety measures that have been put in place to help reduce the transmission of COVID-19 in our community. If that guidance changes, we will let you know, but for now, please plan for your student to adhere to the guidelines.
