Dear Natomas Unified Community,

The first five school days of the 2021-22 school year are complete.  In June, I hoped this communication would be different.  Instead, I must share an honest assessment that COVID will be a part of our lives for longer than all of us had hoped.  While I know it is not our fault, I am sorry for all of us.  In addition to that, the now annual California smoky skies have returned as many of our friends, loved ones, and fellow Californians are evacuating, losing their homes, and facing tougher times.  Add in our Afghan families, Haiti, and more –  and the pain many are feeling is all too real.

Pandemic and Smoke/Outdoor vs Indoor
Let’s talk this week and next.  Right now, we have cancelled or moved physical activities indoors with masks.  First of all, we have a daily system that monitors the Heat Index and Air Quality, often multiple times a day.  Below is a portion of the 11:15 am update.  This is shared with site leaders and used by sites and the District Office to make decisions regarding recesses and sporting events.

Update on air quality in table format as of 8-8-21 at 11:15am

Now add in COVID, and we are faced with either/or options, of which none are easy.  For example, we have heard from or spoken to many parents who have given their students directions to eat outside because they feel that is safer than a cafeteria.  Other parents tell their student(s) the opposite.  With the air quality getting worse, we are trying to balance imperfect options – the pandemic in smaller classrooms (eating without masks) and outdoor smoke.  The good news.  We have updated HVAC and air systems that included our Operations team recently replacing the MERV-13 air filters right before school.  We continue to have portable air filter units in classrooms and work spaces.  Masks provide strong protection indoors against the virus.

I have sensitive lungs from a childhood hospitalization for a lung illness, so I understand many of your worries. My personally purchased KN95 and N95 masks help me against the smoke.   We have about 1,000 extra K95 masks in stock that we can distribute that may help students, with the smoke air quality better.  For youth sizes, they may be adjustable, but I cannot promise.  This is an above and beyond COVID offer for families who have students in the “sensitive health group” like me.   I can share personally that these masks tend to work better than cloth masks with smoke.  But everyone has their own preferences.  Please contact Constituent and Customer Service if your student(s) need one (916) 561-5253 or email [email protected] Then give us a day to get it to the school site.

Employee Shortage
It’s particularly difficult as there is a regional/state/national shortage of skilled professionals.  My biggest concern today is the shortage we have in positions such as Instructional Aides (IAs).  IAs work to support our Kindergarten students and teachers as well as our high need students.  Last week, we added a $1,000 signing bonus.  After a summer of recruitment, the low unemployment numbers means we are running out of adults who want to work.  We are going to look at other strategies.  However, I thought it best to be upfront about our challenges and apologize.  In these extraordinary times, we are doing the best we can.  We have been able to confirm a regional shortage of Instructional Aides.  Almost everyone is looking to fill the same positions with a smaller than usual workforce.  Some districts face dozens and dozens of vacancies, larger ones have hundreds – we have 14 IA’s and some Playground Assistant vacancies.  Better than many, but still a challenge for those expecting support.  Our teaching staff was 98% filled on the first day of school.  That does not help students who are in hard-to-fill classes like Spanish with a sub.  For that, we are working on solutions.

Larry G. Meeks Academy
So what about Distance Learning?  Distance Learning is not allowable under the law right now.  It is not an option today.  We do have our Larry G. Meeks Academy, a virtual program option for parents to consider.  There are now 400+ students fully or partially enrolled.  I just authorized the hiring of 10 more teachers, increasing capacity to 600+.  Please be aware, it will take some time to hire and get new teachers caught up.  This is a blatant overhire of teachers.  We do not need them right now.  But better to hire quality candidates now if the school grows.  If it doesn’t grow, lots of support later in the year for the Meeks kiddos.

This communication is open, personalized and mostly for parents.  Being transparent is our standard approach,  even though this letter will result in a few taking to social media and criticizing.  We don’t fear critique.  We listen, adapt when we can, and are always trying to strengthen ourselves in areas we do well and areas we may not.  I have shared our theme this year is Taking Care of Ourselves and Each Other.  We cannot help others if we are not doing what we can to take care of ourselves.  I promise, NUSD’s staff is exhausted, working 6-7 days a week for almost 18 months now, and doing what we can.  We feel the same stress as parents, family members, friends and employees ourselves.  If you are a family feeling overwhelming stress over COVID, the fires, or the crisis in Afghanistan, Haiti or just in need – please reach out and ask for help.  A fast way is to click https://staging.natomasunified.org/gethelp/  Someone will be in touch soon.

Pandemia y Humo/Exterior vs Interior

Update on air quality in table format as of 8-8-21 at 11:15am

Vamos a estudiar otras estrategias.
