Since students at Witter Ranch Elementary School can’t physically visit their school library, the School’s Librarian Carol Jen found a creative, fun-filled way for students to stay connected. Every Sunday afternoon, students open up their laptops, log into Zoom, and gather for storytime and riddles, where she introduces them to new characters and books to keep them engaged and excited about reading.
“Storytime is a time outside school where students can listen to and talk about stories they might not otherwise find on their own. It sets aside time outside of school to discover new characters and books in a low-stress environment, said Jen.
Each week, Jen focuses on a different topic. The first week, she read stories related to school and libraries, selecting books from both the school’s library and the Sacramento Public Library. These last two Sundays leading up to Halloween and Harvest Celebrations, she focused on books related to magic, tricksters and other mischievous characters in such books as “Sylvester and the Magic Pebble,” “The Garden of Abdul Gasazi,” and “Anansi Does the Impossible.”

This is one of the many examples of the extracurricular activities that are occurring at all schools to keep students connected during distance learning. Look for more stories to be shared.
