back to school

We would like to extend a warm welcome to our families, students, and staff as we usher in the new school year! Our first day of school is Thursday, August 10th, and we have been working diligently and intently on serving students to ensure they are provided a nurturing, engaging environment.

In this edition of Spotlight Community Newsletter, we want to highlight some of the work staff members have done in the summer to prepare for the 2023-2024 school year.

Natomas is a strong community, full of talented employees, and bright and promising students!

Teachers attend Workshops in Support of Enhancing Student’s Literacy Skills

This past week, some teachers attended an argumentative writing workshop in direct support of our focus on Literacy. The workshop will help educators teach students skills such as presenting evidence to back up theories, citing sources, and making informed decisions based on research. In addition, 51 teachers participated in a literacy training workshop where they reviewed grading rubrics and student writing in grade level teams on July 31st. Both workshops will continue to be offered throughout the year, among many others, all in support of the district’s efforts to increase literacy skills for students.

Leadership Institute Kicks Off New School Year for Site and District Administrators

41

Each year prior to the beginning of the school year, we bring administrators together to calibrate and collaborate in the final preparation of launching a new school year. This year’s annual Leadership Institute was held July 25 – July 28 at Paso Verde School.  The first day is an opportunity for all district leadership to come together starting with an introduction from Superintendent Dr. Robyn Castillo. Keeping in mind this year’s theme of “Leading 4ward Together for Our Students”, the group spent time connecting with each other and reviewing how each department can support site leaders to implement and monitor the Areas of Focus at their school sites.

The remaining days focused on providing tools and guidance to site leaders on leading our Areas of Focus (Literacy, System of Assessments, Culture of Resilience, Safety) and the work we are committed to doing all through the lens of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Continuing Our Focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is interwoven throughout all of Natomas Unified’s Areas of Focus and Core Values. To build upon all of the professional development that staff participated in last school year related to DEI, Dr. Sharokky Hollie with the Center for Culturally Relevant Teaching and Learning was invited back to facilitate a session with principals during the Leadership Institute about systems to aid in shaping culturally relevant practices within their school sites. Dr. Hollie will be working with our principals throughout the year.
