Very Rough Draft Portion of NUSD’s Return to Athletics

Natomas Unified Community,

I am doing something highly unusual and sharing a very drafty version of just a few sections of our Natomas Unified Return to Athletics Plan.  Why you ask?  Multiple reasons:

  • Teen social-emotional health is an important element to our recovery.  Hope is a muscle.
  • Beyond that, as we share this VERY DRAFTY document, I want families to see and discuss with their students what is ultimately their family decision.  Families will decide if their student(s) play athletics this year.
  • Many teens are already interacting on their own, without supervision.
  • Also, seeing this as it develops sets expectations based on reality for what this may look like this summer.  No answers yet on timelines for Fall sports.   Natomas Unified has the means to put its best foot forward, do the best it can to mitigate risk (not eliminate it), and give families the choice to decide – play athletics or not play athletics.
  • Oh and if Nike, Under Armour or any other innovative company wants to help us…we are good partners 😉

COVID-19 has already affected Natomas Unified families and staff.  As people interact more, there may be increases in cases, like are being reported in neighboring counties who opened early.   As a parent, with a now senior student/athlete in NUSD, our family will be having the same discussions very soon.  So please read this for what it is…a rough cut, first draft “essay” from when you were in school.  Start the family conversation and expect this will be revised over the next few weeks. And expect this will remain a “work in progress…” Life right now seems to be consistently changing every few days.

Thanks
Chris
